Women’s rights is a highly controversial subject in today’s society. In the speeches “Is it a Crime for a Citizen of the United States to Vote?” by Susan B. Anthony and “Freedom or Death” by Emmeline Pankhurst, women’s rights are the main issue discussed. Anthony’s speech fights clear as day for women’s rights, while Pankhurst calls out the government on their discrimination towards women. While Emmeline Pankhurst’s speech was more effective than Susan B. Anthony, they both strongly expressed their opinion. Susan B. Anthony’s speech fights for the rights of women through the use of ethos. She refers to the constitution throughout her speech. Anthony believed that as the government they should “assert the province of government to be to secure the people in the enjoyment of their unalienable rights.” Theoretically, most along with Anthony, would believe this guarantees men and women the same rights, but surprisingly, the discrimination that women went through during this time was highlighted. She compares her time as a British suffragist to men who are in battle. Pankhurst goes on by saying, “I am here as a soldier who has temporarily left the field of battle in order to explain…”.
