What does it mean to be “free”? Freedom is where you have the ability to do whatever you want without the restraint of others. Achieving freedom was the desire and goal that colonists and revolutionaries pursued throughout the Revolutionary War and many believed was a god given right to man. But the desire for freedom came with its and struggles and freedom did not come easy. In fact, many were not willing to fight for freedom due their fear of British government and their rule over the colonies.
Zach’s Reflection Freedom is something we often take for granted and do not realize how much it can impact our life. But how did we earn that freedom and how do we keep that freedom that we so often enjoy without thinking about it? It is because of the brave men and women who are willing to sacrifice everything including their lives to defend our rights and Country. How do these brave men and women get treated after serving our Country is an important issue, which is where originations like the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) come in to help.
The absence of freedom creates a society that is easily controlled. It’s similar to communism or a totalitarianism. Without freedom, our very nation would have not come into existence. Some people would say that the failures of freedom overshadow its successes, but the United States is built around those successes. Security gives you a path to take, and if you take that trail, it will lead to a complacent life.
Why should we give up everything we have fought for? The US has been fighting for freedom since the early 1700s. So why would we want to be safe over free? Right to the streets of Memphis, Huckleberry Finn and The Civil Right Movement demonstrates that it's better to have freedom because you don't depend in other decisions.
For centuries humankind has been drawn to nature. Ancient civilizations saw nature as divine, the Greek and Roman gods all reflect some aspect of the natural world. Even today, people leave civilization to live in nature. Chris McCandless’s journey, leaving civilization behind, contained within the book Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, reflects this. There are countless television shows, books, songs, poems and art that reflect Earth’s natural appeal.
World War II was a time of uncertainty and panic. The United States was fighting the protect democracy against Nazi Germany. At the same time this was happening, there was a war happening internally. The US was hypocritically and irrationally taking away American freedoms for the sake of possibly protecting national security. Japanese Americans who were not guilty whatsoever were being imprisoned because of government fear.
Freedom is a type of living that everyone in the world would appreciate having. Some people live in a communist country or a country where freedom do not exist and everything is controlled by the government. With many rules and regulations proposed by the government, people feel that it takes away from their freedoms. Nonetheless, America was established upon freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. People want to live this way along with protection from danger.
In fact, I would only categorize a society as being “free” if its citizens are able to disobey the government peacefully as a means to make their views known to the public. From the founding of this fine country, through the civil rights movements, up to modern day politics and every era in between, civil disobedience has made its presence and importance known to all. I truly believe that without the ability to stand up for your opinions, a society would devolve into a more restricted and eventually oppressive state. For as long as the government holds power over the lives of those which it governs, I understand it to be true that it is the obligation of the people to keep track of the government’s actions and to have the courage to speak out when they take issue with its
H. L. Mencken wrote “the average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe.” I agree with this quote because of the deeper meaning it has behind it. In today’s society, people do not seem to have ambitions or dreams that they want to pursue. A lot of people settle with a job that pays just enough to make a living or they do not go beyond their limits to get a higher education to be able to make more money.
Balancing safety and liberty is difficult because due to whatever circumstances may arise, sometimes one must trump the other. At the same time, we cannot completely be safe or completely be free. Without safety, U.S. citizens will get hurt. Without personal liberties, U.S. citizens will be unhappy. So, the United States needs some sort of balance.
Freedom I believe once freedom has been won, it can be taken away. If you are being bad or not following the rules, than you should not have the rights to do what you want. Freedom has been given to you for a reason, and you need to use it for that reason. I believe it should be taken away because sometimes freedom shouldn’t always be “free.” You should be limited on what you get to do.
Freedom can have many meetings to many people. Freedom to some may mean to be free in a trapped society filled with rules and regulations. Freedom can be revealed to the naked eye in things such as laws, organizations, and even clubs. Freedom to me is living your life however you choose, wherever you choose, and whenever you choose to do so. Angela Davis had once lost those privileges.
To be free is defined as the condition or right of being able or allowed to do whatever you want to, without being controlled or limited. In today’s society freedom can allow you to a variety of things. To be safe is defined as the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger or risk. In my opinion safety is more important than freedom. Freedom is something that can be offered anywhere.
What is freedom? Is it an absolute right or is it something we can live without it? People born to be free. Throughout history freedom defined differently according to different cultures and different period of time. Freedom shows an alteration cultures to culture.
Freedom means the power or right to act, speak, or think without restraint, and the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved. Freedom is the correction to do what he/she wants, live life, and eat what he/she wants. How do we live free? We live free by not judging other people’s freedom rights. Everyone has their own rights.
