The Freedom Writers Diaries is a book about young teens which touches on many mature topics. One major topic in this book was abuse. Many people go through abuse and The Freedom Writers Diaries did not shy away from this topic, but gives a raw account on what it really feels like to go through it. Although their abuse, whether physical or mental was not right at all, it did make the diarists stronger than ever before. The song “Warrior” by Demi Lovato relates to the experiences students in the book underwent. She sings about the abuse from that she had to sustain from her father. This time it is physical abuse from her boyfriend. She also writes about her experiences after reading about Celie’s situation in The Color Purple. She writes, “I would try to think of what I did to cause it? Why did I make him so mad? What should I have done? When would it stop? Where would I draw the line?” She used to believe that what was happening to her was a consequence of her actions, but it took her a long time to realize that she should stop blaming herself. Everytime her boyfriend abused her, he apologized to her and seemed genuinely sorry. She realized that if he kept hitting her, he was not actually sorry, but was just pretending. This relates to the song because it says, “ You can save your apologies, you’re nothing but a liar...Now I'm taking back my life today. Nothing left that you can say, 'Cause you were never gonna take the blame anyway. ” This shows how the victim comes to realize that regardless of apologies, it was going to happen again and again. Although the apologies may have seemed sincere, the abuser wasn’t going to stop. They needed to seek help and stop going back to them. The diarist pushed through her struggles because she mentions that she got out of the abusive relationship.
