Many colonists believed the Tea Act, which lowered the tax on tea, was a ploy to trick them into buying tea. In November 1773, three ships carrying British tea arrived in Boston, they unloaded all the cargo except the tea. The British Government wouldn’t allow the ships to return until they offloaded the tea. As tensions in the harbor grew, one hundred to one hundred fifty colonists dressed as Indians dumped over ninety thousand pounds of tea into the harbor. The British felt the colonists’ actions were uncalled for and placed the Coercive Acts on Massachusetts, which was meant to punish the colonists, which only increased tensions. On April 19, 1775, 700 British soldiers marched to Concord with orders to seize the colonial armory to prevent a colonial uprising.When passing through Lexington, the colonist minutemen fought a brief skirmish with the British. They marched into Concord, arriving two hours later. At the Old North Gate Bridge in Concord, colonist minutemen and British soldiers exchanged shots. As the British retreated to Boston, thousands of American militiamen ambushed them. At the end of the day, 273 British soldiers were wounded or dead, and only 95 colonists were wounded or dead.
