Faced with his death, King Louis XVI stated to the crowd, “My people, I die innocent!” He then turned to the men who would be killing him and said, “Gentlemen, I am innocent of everything of which I am accused. I hope my blood may cement the good fortune of the French.” The sharp blade of the guillotine then fell. The American revolution inspired the French revolution by providing a blueprint on how to run a nation as a democracy. It was also an inspiration for the French because it gave them hope they could defeat a major military power. Enlightenment ideas inspired the French revolution because they made people want basic human rights and ways to run their new government.
