The French Revolution began in 1789 and was a disruption for a modern society and economy. Two of the many causes of the revolution were disagreements between the nobles, the monarchy, and the middle class, or bourgeoisie, and Louis XVI’s unsuccessful rule. During this period, like in other periods in Europe, people from different classes had different opinions as to how rights should be distributed. The poor suffered greatly as they always had without important necessities, such as food and shelter. Assistance was to be given to the poor. Inequality was still alive within the women, but they were written a declaration by a brave feminist; Men were also written declarations. Women were not equal and did not have rights until recent years. Men had many more opportunities and rights than women, but their power also depended on their class. If a man lived in poverty, he were to have “less meaning” that a man living in wealth. According to the statement in Robespierre’s speech, equality and virtue of men were important for the “republic” (Doc 5). There was a belief stated in the “Preamble of the Declaration of the Rights of Man” that there was an uproar in the public and problems with the government because the men’s rights were “neglected” (Doc 2). This declaration was written to provide in a statement how and what the rights of men should be. As their was a Declaration written for men, there was also one written for women. The “Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen” was a statement written by proud feminist Olympe de Gouges, which greatly instituted the idea that women should be allowed into the “national assembly” and that if there was any problems, it was because of the unequal treatment of women (Doc 3). de Gouges was a woman who saw the suffering that the women lived with because of the inequality and she wanted rights for her
