“ Singing the song of angry men, it is the music of the people who will not be slaves again(...) there is a life about to start when tomorrow comes ” The French Revolution from 1789 - 1789 was a rebellious act of the people of France to the way the monarchy had been treating them. The words of “Do You Hear The People Sing” from the movie “ Les Misérables” about the French Revolution showed how the people of France were feeling because of the conditions they were put under and the way they were treated. King Louis XVI was the king at the time and was an absolute ruler and gave privileges to the first and second estates. The third estate was the only state that paid taxes and it could be so overbearing they could be left with nothing while the other states lived extravagantly. When the people of France decide to take action they formed the national assembly and made a bill of rights. The bill of rights for the French Revolution outlined the goals for the end of the Revolution, which were Liberty, fraternity, equality, Property, Security, Resistance to oppression and freedom of religion. The French Revolution ended in 1799 but yet there was still war and chaos in France. The rest of Europe's monarchy was in fear that the new and improved France would rub off on there people so they joined forces against France. France needed someone who was politically smart and could manage a country It has been questioned and debated on whether or not Napoleon betrayed the goals of the French Revolution. As Thomson Gale puts it “The two men responsible for the Concordat of 1801 were motivated by practical and religious considerations”. The concordat was not just beneficial for napoleon but also extremely beneficial for the pope. The pope at the time was preaching about revolutionary acts and the monarchy was extremely upset and so the pope went to France looking for someone on his side. The pope is what really allowed the people of France to trust Napoleon. The church had a lot of power they were involved in almost all government affairs and international affairs before the French Revolution. When the pope signed the concordat it was his way of showing that he agreed with Napoleon and that they would follow him as well and because the majority of the population was Christian this was a huge push for them to start following him as well. That same year Napoleon, as elected, was the year he made the Napoleonic code, that states that all men are equal, the right to vote and it got rid of class privileges as well as privilege based on birth.
