French Revolution
The French Revolution played a great role in the history of Europe. France was a rich and populous country; the king had complete authority of the country, government, and citizens (Green). In between 1789 to 1799, there were many causes of the revolution; for instance, serious debt difficulties, soaring taxes, acute food shortages, and so much more. From the protests for improvement in government, it became more extreme and brutal, which lead the monarchy to end. It came back eventually with Napoleon taking over, but this was the turning point of France, and other parts of Europe, and became the inspiration for other revolutions too ("List Of 10 Major Events Of The French …show more content…

As the country was lacking money, there were no other alternatives than to increase taxes. It was not necessary for the nobles and the clergy to pay their taxes, which infuriated the third estate, the normal people (Green). To calm them down, the king called in all three of these estates and tried to find a solution (“List Of 10 Major Events Of The French Revolution”). There were far more people in the third estate than the first and second together, which was why the king changed the voting system to one vote from each estate; this meant that the nobles and the clergy together created 2 votes, and the third estate itself only had one. With anger, the third estate left the meeting, and decided to create their own national assembly. They were lacking goods that are necessary such as food. The cost of bread was unbelievably expensive, which was why the lower classes could not afford them ("Women And The March On Versailles : Western Civilization II Guides"). This lead to the “Storming of the Bastille” on July 14th, 1789. About 1000 people of the Third Estate went towards the Bastille, a prison of political prisoners, as they needed gunpowder for their weapons. They used it as a place to take out their frustrations, which was a cause created by their hunger. Even though the head tried to withstand the crowd, at the end, he gave up and came to the side of the third estate people. The King heard this news, however, even though he tried to prevent the Revolution from happening, it was already too late.
