According to Estimates of Illness and Deaths at Valley Forge (Doc. A), there was about 4,000 illnesses in February 1778. The illnesses mainly came from diseases. Staying at Valley Forge It is February 1st, 1778 and nearly 30 percent of Washington’s troops are ill and cannot report for duty (Document A). The Revolutionary War has been hard on the Continiental Army and after this year is over, many soldiers plan on leaving. But unlike them, I chose to stay. Tyranny, like hell is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph (Document D).
As the American Revolution was in full swing, soldiers were being recruited and fighting for their freedom from the British. However, the fight for freedom took more than just fighting skills. The men fighting had to endure the harsh conditions and the little help and supplies they received. The American army went to Valley Forge in hopes of spying on the British army. However, the winter at Valley Forge was harsh with the cold seeping into their poorly built shelters and the little amount of supplies they had was not enough to keep everyone alive and healthy.
This shows that even though they were starving, sick, and close to death, many soldiers continued to train and get stronger, which ends up paying off. Also, in the writing The American Crisis by Thomas Paine, he writes about how rough of a time the soldiers faced and how the men trained at this time.
In the winter, Washington took his troops to Valley Forge, which was 18 miles from Philadelphia. At this time, Valley Forge was a difficult place to live for the Patriots. It was a struggle but if I were a Patriot in Valley Forge fighting for Washington’s Army, I wouldn’t quit. I won’t quit for three big reasons; yes I know there were a lot of sick soldiers but not as much as dying soldiers, another thing is the conditions were horrible, but there were many brave soldiers who stuck with it, and stayed with Washington, lastly I do not want to be a “summer soldier” because freedom is valuable so it is worth fighting for.
The French and Indian War altered the relations of the American Colonies and Britain through political, economic, and geographical issues. At the start of the French and Indian War the French owned a big majority of land but the during the war the French lost their land to the English. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 gave the English, the French land of North America (Doc A).
Journal Entry 1: We are gathering at the camp to prepare for a speech from General George Washington. He began, “We are not much of a match for the British Army, but I know that our determination can win this.” Every time General George Washington gives us a speech it makes me want to fight even more. Washington continues, “We don’t have much food left or guns for that matter.” He adds, “But I assure you the Congress is sending us supplies as we speak!”
There was a shortage of uniforms and clothing for the soldiers. They were often without shoes, coats, and pants. Washington tried consistently to cloth the soldiers and provide them with necessary garments. Some books state
In Document A, it shows that on “ February 1, 1778 3,989 people were sick with an Illness.” That is 50% of the total soldiers at Valley Forge at the time. This shows that if more people were willing to stay, fight, and help with needed supplies, there would be more people able to fight,a greater and easier chance of winning, and staying a powerful
First off, Dr. Albigence Waldo, who wrote a diary at Valley Forge states, "Poor food – hard lodging – Cold Weather – fatigue – Nasty Clothes – nasty Cookery..." This quote shows that not only did the soldiers have bad and small amounts of food, but also horribly built shelters, trapping smoke in making it impossible to breathe. Additionally, he states, "Why are we sent here to starve and Freeze.... There comes a Soldier, his bare feet are seen thro’ his worn out Shoes," This quote shows that the living conditions were so bad at Valley Forge that people didn't even have clothes and shoes to wear in the middle of winter. There were farms and small stores in the area, but there was not enough food to feed all of the soldiers and many became desperate and attempted to steal food from the farmers and food stores. Washington ended up writing to Congress, saying subsistence in the best manner they can ... “I am now convinced, beyond a doubt that unless some great and capital change suddenly takes place… this army must inevitably be reduced to one or other of these three things. Starve, dissolve, or disperse, in order to obtain …” After letting Congress know this, General Washington received a message saying a large British group of troops was nearby (Allen 27).
The soldiers were inadequately trained and lacked ammunition, food, and other provisions. They sometimes even went without clothing and went barefoot in the winter. However, General Washington was able to give them direction and encourage them to persevere. The common soldier would prove important.
France ultimately wanted Britain not to be too powerful and in order todo so they had to be weakened by having the Americans win there
The French revolution is considered to be the most significant and effective event in the history. It changed the lives of many peoples and changed the future. Since people of France were under the control of the King they wanted to get rid of French government to eliminate power of the king. There were numerous other factors that also lead the French to the revolution. There were also many social unfairness among the taxes between the estates.
Throughout my whole life, I have always been sort of a lone wolf. As a child of two immigrant parents, I have often felt the struggle of feeling alone and without guidance in American society. Both of my parents are Mexican immigrants that came into this country during the 1990’s looking for a better place to start a family. Ever since I was a young boy, my parents have repeatedly told me that being a hard worker and taking school seriously were going to be vital ideals that I needed to follow to achieve success. Neither of my parents had the opportunity to study at an institution of higher education, and their dream had always been for their son to be the first in their family to do so.
