Information systems do indeed affect the performance of organizations. Information systems paired with management who understands how to leverage the systems against their operation can vault their firms to the top of the industry. A great example of this is FreshDirect and how they utilized data collection from reorders and simple user interface technology on phone applications to help the consumer make easy choices along with the fast local deliveries (Gallaugher, 2011). Walmart is using their phone application to allow customers to see if specific items are in stock at their nearest store (inventory linking technology). Walmart also paired with InHome Pilot to offer delivery services to customers in some stores (Morris, 2023). The delivery service has a focus of sending the same associates to the same houses to create a personal relationship with the customers. Walmart is also using AI to help pallet thousands of pounds of product instead of using humans directly. This is allowing products to go straight from the truck to the aisle they belong in (Morris, 2023). According to Barney, for a company to sustain a competitive advantage, its resources must be valuable, rare, inimitable, and organized (1991). Technology is not rare or inimitable but when coupled with strategic management that looks to accumulate data and utilize it for projections and outlook, it can change industries. The company I work for is a trucking company and we always utilize the newest systems and technologies for electronic logging devices, GPS tracking, and dispatch software. Strategically, it is easy to look back in time or do an analysis of load counts, track service incidents, and breakdowns. However, without vision and utilization, none of the technology would matter.
