Freshman's Short Story: The Haunted House

His name is Sean Freeman and he is twenty years old. He moved into a new house at the beginning of the month. The house was rickety and dark, but it’s all he could afford. He was kicked out of the house at nineteen because he wasn’t keeping after himself, then he lost everything. His money, somewhere to live and all together, his happiness in life. It was nearly dinner and he needed to go get something from the store to prepare. Sean unloaded the cereals, frozen cheese pizzas, and sodas into his kitchen, then prepared to eat. The kitchen was a little small, but enough for a person or two. His kitchen table was cluttered with junk but he made enough room on it for his plate and his cup. Then he ate his pizza. A cupboard slammed shut followed by a swear-as if someone was in his house. Sean who was feeling scared, reached to his bedside table to turn on his lamp. The light created a small pool of light, but enough of it to grab a bat hidden under his bed and he quietly headed down the stairs. As Sean was on the third to last stair, a creak from the stairs echoed through the hall. He heard the back door slam open and when he checked, he saw nothing in the kitchen. “Too late,” he thought “Too late.” It was the twenty-ninth of October and Sean had nearly forgotten about Ben’s Halloween party. Knowing Ben would be dressed up, he needed to find a costume or at least, face paint. Even though Sean was twenty he wanted to have some fun, so he headed down the stairs to look for a costume or face paint. Sean was digging in the boxes and finally found something that felt like face paint. But, as he pulled up the box he discovered it was nothing more than an empty tin.
