Friar Lawrence Is To Blame In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is one of the most well known, yet controversial pieces written by Shakespeare. Some argue that the root blame to the lovers' demise can be traced back to their families' ancient feud, and others argue that possibly Friar Lawrence can be put to blame for their tragedy. Although everyone is equally at fault, Juliet’s immaturity and impulsive behaviors led to the death of not only her, but her lover and cousin. Let’s start off by acknowledging that Juliet is a 13 year old girl who, like many teenagers, isn’t worried about other people’s feelings. She clearly knows that Romeo is her enemy, yet she still thinks going after him would be a good idea, which is proven in Act II, Scene 2, where she declares her love for Romeo. Juliet also didn’t even attempt to ask her father his opinion on Romeo, but instead she just went behind Lord Capulet’s back when he could’ve been okay with her marrying him. Regardless of the “ancient grudge” between the families, Lord Capulet protects Romeo from Tybalt because he sees him as a respectable guest, so maybe he would’ve been okay with handing his daughter over to him. That possibility was ruined soon after, because Romeo decided to kill Tybalt, which brings us to the next point.
