Friar Lawrence Responsible For The Deaths Of Romeo And Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story which results in both of their deaths. Romeo and Juliet are from rival families who have a strong hatred. When they fall in love, they don’t want their families to know. The story tells of how they try to maintain their love till death by suicide. Many characters have an influence in their deaths and in theory every single character can be blamed to some degree. But Friar Laurence, a man of the church and a good friend of Romeo, is most responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Despite other characters actions, Friar Laurences failure to notify Romeo of his plan, marrying them secretly, and his advice to both Romeo and Juliet played the biggest role in their deaths.

Romeo had been banished from Verona because he murdered Tybalt, Juliet's cousin. Romeo runs to the Friar's cell to hide and begs for advice and threatens to kill himself out of grief. Friar Laurence created a plan on the spot and stated, “But look thou stay not till the watch be set, For then thou canst not pass to Mantua, where thou shalt live, till we can find a time to blaze your marriage, reconcile your friends…..”(Act 3 Scene 3) In this rant, the Friar suggests that Romeo says goodbye to Juliet and run away to Mantua until he can convince the prince to revoke his banishment. This quickly thought out advice contains many flaws but Romeo follows his directions while Friar Laurence scrambles to help Juliet with her issues. Because of the Friars previous mistake of having the secret marriage, Juliet's father is arranging her to marry Paris, a wealthy nobleman. Juliet obviously doesn't want to do it so she is desperate to find a way to get out of this. She considers killing herself but she consults with Friar Laurence. Little did she know both would have the same result. Friar Laurence is of course desperately trying to figure this out. Capulet, or Mr. Montague are most responsible. Tybalt created the most friction between the two familes. He also set of the spark by killing Mercutio, which caused Romeo to kill him, therefore leading to Romeo’s banishment. Also Mr. Capulet and Mr. Montague were too unaware of how their children are affected by the feud to help them. Although this is all true, these characters did not directly form a path to Romeo and Juliets death like Friar Laurence. From the very moment the Friar is introduced he begins to lead the lovers to death as presented by the evidence. His secret marriage created the complications with Tybalt and other characters. And because of the complications he caused, he created a plan that is directly correlated to their deaths. Better yet, Friar Laurence made the mistake that directly caused Romeos
