Andrew Chen Mrs. Wyckoff English 1A 30 March 2023 Romeo and Juliet Essay “For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” (V. iii. 320-321) The play of Romeo and Juliet had many outside factors who drove the plot into a tragedy. Through the death of many characters, Romeo and Juliet’s were the final outcome. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet was directly caused by Friar Lawrence’s interference and Romeo’s incompetence. Friar Lawrence is responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet because he irresponsibly organized their marriage and reunions. Friar Lawrence secretly marries Romeo and Juliet without anyone's knowledge. “Till Holy Church incorporate two in one.” (II .vi. 37) Friar Lawrence decides to marry them in hopes of mending the relationship between the Montagues and Capulets. The truth is, this marriage only brought them more together, which turned their marriage into a complicated mess. Right after Baltasar delivers the message to Romeo about Juliet’s death, Romeo quickly sends him away and plans to travel back to Verona. “Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight.” (V. i. 37) He also buys poison from the apothecary and plans to die with Juliet. Before Friar Lawrence’s arrival to the tomb, Romeo hastily gives a speech and drinks the poison. “Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.” (V. iii. 120) Without logical thinking about the death of Juliet, he insists on death to be with Juliet again.
