Through many decades, women around the world have fight for their rights as human beings. Facing different problems based on their race, religion, physical appearance and financial situation; struggling to raise their voices. Two women that fought all their lives against misogyny, sexism, racism, prejudice, and xenophobia were Frida Kahlo and Nina Simone. Both individuals broke standards of society and pushed the limits after overcoming adversity. My goal in this essay is to present the differences of these two women and how similar they were. On July 6, 1907 in Coyocoan, Mexico City, Mexico, Frida Kahlo was born. Her father, to who Frida was very close to, was a German immigrant and photographer. She did not sing, but played the piano beautifully and by ear. Her family did not have a lot of money, nevertheless the community raised money in order to make a scholarship for Eunice, who graduated valedictorian from her high school class. She had the dream of becoming a classic pianist, but her dreams fell apart when her admission to Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia was denied. Eunice who had being victim of prejudice and hatred all her life, knew it was due to racism. Frida, who had to spend weeks in her bed because of the horrifying bus accident she was victim of, decided to start painting to avoid thinking about the pain and boredom. Nina, who was rejected from the university of her dreams and needed a job, decided to sing at the Midtown Bar & Grill on Pacific Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Neither of these two women expected that from the tragedy of her lives, something good would happen, but it did. Frida discovered her incredible talent painting in her bed, what gave her recognition worldwide as one of the greater painters.
