But a girl named Alma asked why can’t girls get the water, and this leaves the teacher curious, but the boys start thinking differently. The boys start to bully Alma for what she said, but Alma will soon reach her goals. The text states, “And that's the way it had always been until one extraordinary afternoon when, right out of the blue, just after the teacher had picked Ernie Chapman and Garnet Dixon to carry the water, my seatmate, Alma Niles, put up her hand and said: ‘Why can't girls go for the water, too?’ “ (6). This quote shows her being courageous for the girls when she is in an uncomfortable situation. Another quote that shows the teacher being courageous is, “So at lunchtime, just as the boys were winding up their week's game ("And real great, eh? Without the girls?" Ernie Chapman was gloating loudly from the pitcher's mound), when Miss Ralston, without her bell, leaped through our clustered huddles at the entry door and headed straight toward the softball field, she took us all completely by surprise,” (37). This quote shows that Mss Ralston is standing up for the girls in an uncomfortable and surprising way, this can lead to her being courageous for the
The boys in the story's last response was,“Alma,” said Arnold earnestly, “the other guys would kill me if they ever found out I told you this but sometimes carrying the water isn't that much fun. On cold days it's real hard work. You're better off in the warm school.” In other words, the boys tried to convince and lie to the girls that carrying the bucket wasn't fun. After all of the abuse the girls induced by the guys, the girls still didn’t give up.
Lao Tzu once said, “Because of a great love, one is courageous.” Have you ever gained courage from your loved ones? Have you ever had to rush to the rescue when they are in danger? Have you ever heard of moral courage? Have you ever seen someone with moral courage? Some people think they have moral courage, but then some don't have any. His actions impacted his people in his town because they eventually found out that he was telling the truth and that he wasn't just making stuff up.
Napoleon Bonaparte, a former emperor, once said, “Courage is not having the strength to go on; it is going on when you don't have the strength.” Similarly, courage is a central theme shown through the characters in the historical fiction novel To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee. The novel tells a story about a young girl, Scout, living in the 1930s, in Maycomb, Alabama. She tells the story of how her father, Atticus Finch, defends a wrongly accused black man, Tom Robinson. Atticus is a courageous man and is also a good influencer to his kids, Scout and Jem. He teaches them that everyone matters in this world no matter how different someone can be. Harper Lee writes, "This case, Tom Robinson's case, is something that goes to the essence of a man's conscience-Scout, I couldn’t go to church if I didn't try to help that man."(104). This quote shows how much Atticus wanted to help out Tom even if he knows that the outcome will still be the same but if he at least tries he will not live with the guilt inside of him for the rest of his life. Not only did Atticus show courage, Boo Radley did as well.
In 'To Kill A Mockingbird' the idea of living according to one's beliefs requires courage through the character of Atticus Finch. As a moral compass in the novel, Atticus embodies the importance of following one's conscience despite societal pressures. When defending Tom Robinson, a falsely accused black man, Atticus declares, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win" (Pg 76). This quote highlights Atticus's unwavering commitment to justice, even in inevitable defeat. His willingness to confront the deeply ingrained racism of Maycomb County exemplifies the courage needed to challenge prevailing opinions.

This quote by Nelson Mandela reminds me of Atticus in the story To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus had enough courage to overcome any obstacle that stood in front of him defending him, his family, and Tom Robinson. Courage is having the ability to act, despite fear, pain, or uncertainty. Courage does not suppress fear but allows one to continue in the face of fear. I made the decision, for example, to tell my parents about my sexuality. I am gay, and I knew the scrutiny I could face at home, and in society if I told my parents. Although fearful, I was courageous, and shared with them that I was going though.
