Friday Night Lights opens with the perspective of Boobie Miles, the junior running back for the Permian football team, noticed by recruiters from across the U.S. because of his incredible speed. The story begins just before a football game, later we learn that Boobie Miles injures his knee just before, and has surgery on it. But, now he doesn't quite play the same way he once had, and the other team seem out to permanently damage his knee. But he his hopes have been uplifted, because the Permian Panthers are going to play Midland Lee tonight, the arch-rivals of Permian. If they win, they go to the district championship, and after that, they could go to State. Another point of view in this chapter is Mike Winchell's, who is the Permian Quarterback. His father had once helped develop Mikes healthy respect for himself. Then, his father had passed away, Leaving him alone and questioning his talent in sports. After that, mike had sought to live with his brother, Joe Bill, but he wouldn't allow him to. He wanted his brother to stay and play football, and make his father proud. Joe Bill had never been able to forget his dream of being a star on the Permian football team. The other two sections of the chapter follow Don, and his father Charlie who had played for the Permian Panthers when he was in high school. After high school he went on to Texas A & M only to find out that the football team there did not need him as much as the Panthers had. His academic career had spun out of control, he wasn't ready for the work load of college. He transferred to a small college in Oklahoma. Eventually, Charlie completely dropped out, drifting from one job to the next, and finally landed a job in a bar back in Odessa.
