A person’s actions give others an insight into their character, whether they communicate ideas about their behaviour or through simple words. This idea can be seen in the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe created by Fannie Flagg, which revolves around the experiences of Ninny Threadgoode and the history of a fictional railroad town named Whistle Stop, while also focusing on Ninny’s developing friendship with another woman named Evelyn Couch. Through the characters of Idgie, Artis and Buddy, Jr. in Fried Green Tomatoes, Fannie Flagg proves that a person’s actions influence other peoples’ opinion regarding their character. An example of opinions being formed from a character’s hardships and reactions is the character Buddy, Jr. after the train incident. After Buddy, Jr.’s arm is severed from a train incident, Buddy continues to display an optimistic attitude through the actions of smiling at Idgie when she arrives at the scene of the incident, as well as keeping a brave attitude by not crying and not feeling sorry for himself when Ninny and Cleo visit him in the hospital. These actions allow the reader, as well as Ninny Threadgoode, to form an opinion that Buddy has a strong and optimistic character, as Buddy, Jr. remains calm and collected throughout the incident, showing signs of maturity and strength. More opinions about Buddy’s character are formed when the accomplishments of Buddy, Jr. are revealed to the readers, as it would reveal more about his character. For example, he was the 1946 Champion Wild Turkey Hunter, which is an amazing accomplishment when the reader considers that Buddy, Jr. only had one arm to shoot with. This accomplishment that Buddy achieved while at a disadvantage quickly allows readers to form another opinion that Buddy, Jr. is an optimistic character who will always strive for success, as he decides to take on a two-handed sport with only a single arm, and proceeds to win. This opinion is also supported by Ninny when she says “He even went on to play all kinds of sports. never let that arm stop him in any way. ” (Flagg 110). She confirms Buddy, Jr.’s optimistic attitude towards many hardships in life, fortifying the previous opinions formed during the incident. A person’s past experiences are important to determining the nature of their character, but considering their reactions to these experiences and how they act moving forward are also crucial in creating ideas and opinions about their character.
