We as a nation have come a long way from the times of the cold war era to the current time period. The cold war system was based on division and everyone focused on one aspect which was staying away from each other. In today’s era, we have the globalization system which is all about the balance of power and how each country and/or individual can use it to their benefit. The main perk to them is the world wide web. Due to the global market place, the balance of power between nations, investors and individuals has been greatly affected in many negative ways.

To begin with, Friedman talks about the balance of power between nation-states. As of now, America is the dominant super power in the world, but who knows for how long. With all the shifting of power between other states who can tell when America’s power and dominance will be at its end. Friedman says that countries balance each other out such as in how China balances Russia and Iran balances Iraq. However, who balances out the United States? Individuals have more power today than ever before. Friedman says that people now can easily get money transfers and find weapon designs with no problem thanks to the world wide web. Friedman is absolutely correct that this easily happens now and people like Osama bin Laden took advantage of what he knew he could do. Bin Laden was able to capitalize by using the global market place’s readily available resources of money, weapons, and people to do a huge amount of damage. Through the world wide web, Bin Laden gained information of weapon designs which would eventually lead to the 9/11 attacks.
