“A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you.” This quote from Elbert Hubbard is perfectly represented in Of Mice and Men in the many different friendships that take place. Throughout life, we all make friends and share many experiences with them. This is an important part of what makes us the people we are today. Friendship also affects the way that we act towards others. In the book friendship helps to show the characters’ personalities and what they would do for others in tough situations. The main theme of Of Mice and Men is friendship and it’s shown by George, Lennie, Slim, and Candy. One example of friendship in Of Mice And Men is the George’s friendship with Lennie. From the beginning of the book, you can tell that George and Lennie have a strong friendship. Slim became friends with them earlier than you’d think. Slim showed trust and friendship in Lennie first when he gave one of his pups to Lennie. Slim comments on Lennie's ability to work hard and mentions that it is obvious Lennie is not too bright. Later on, Lennie doesn’t respect his trust and he accidentally kills the pup. Before knowing what happened to the pup George thanks Slim for giving him the pup. Feeling comfortable with Slim, George explains that he knew Lennie's aunt. After her death, Lennie just naturally began staying with George and following him around. George also tells Slim about Lennie's trouble in Weed. Slim also shows friendship to Lennie and George by backing up Lennie when he broke Curley’s hand. A quote of their friendship is, “I think you got your han’ caught in a machine. If you don’t tell nobody what happened, we ain't goin’ to.” (Steinbeck 64). This ties back to those three being friends by showing that Slim will have George's and Lennie's backs for almost all things that
