John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men portrays a life of two migrant workers Lennie and George. They have been best friends. George is characterized as a shorter man with a dark face while lennie is almost the opposite a man with a large face and a large body but he acts childish mentally and often forgets what he is told. Together both of them set off to go work for a ranch in one day hoping to achieve their dream of owning their own ranch. Of mice and men essay “True friendship is like peeing your pants, everyone can see it but only you can feel the true warmth.” In the book Of mice and men George is the type of guy that shows true friendship. It may not like it at first but once you really start getting into the book and thinking about everything he does, you’ll see it. Trust me.
Have you ever felt that your companion was like a parent or like a child? A great example of this question are the two main characters in the book of “Of Mice and Men”. These two main characters, which are George and Lennie were just like a parent and a child. It is clear that in the novel “Of Mice and Men”, Steinbeck uses companionship, American dream, and guardianship to describe Lennie and George’s resemblance. On the other hand, Steinbeck uses George’s leadership, cynicism, liberty and Lennie’s child like behavior, naivety, stability to explain their contradiction.
In “Of Mice and Men”, Steinbeck is writing about loyalty and friendship. George was very loyal to Lennie even after all of Lennies scandalous acts, Curley had wanted to make sure that his wife is safe, and another example would be that Candy’s dog was Cany’s best friend. Although Lennie and George had their differences, their friendship and loyalty towards each other shines throughout the story. Lennie had said “You said I was your cousin!” and George had replied with “That was a lie.
John Steinbeck was an old school soul who enjoyed personally talking face to face, how does he feel about all these new advances in technology? Steinbeck has been seen to write about how he wishes that he could be like the news reporters who just go up and talk to people. What he never realized is that he already had that personality and can fester up a conversation with anyone. Modern conveniences have extremely decreased face to face interactions in the modern age though it was bad during Steinbeck’s time, it is worse now. Steinbeck saw that convenience was for better but social isolations were a change for the worse.

They dream of owning a farm but are held back by Lennie’s childlike mentality and fetish for soft things. They find work on a ranch in Soledad, California. Then we meet Curley, a man with anger and jealousy issues.
The men on the ranch travel by themselves and have no real connections to each other. Curley's wife spends her days wandering around the ranch, hoping someone will be open to having a conversation with. Crooks is completely isolate and has to live in a small room next to the barn because he has a different skin tone compared to all the ranch workers. Lastly, Candy feels lonely and isolated since he is separated from the other men after losing his hand and losing his dog. I think one of the morals of the story is that everyone needs someone to talk to in order to survive.
Of Mice and Men was published in 1937 during a time of bi-racism between the caucasians and the african americans, and the apathetic Great Depression, which may have served as inspiration. In the novel two opposites attract, a gargantuan but mentally challenged man by the name of Lennie, and a small, nimble, and intelligent man named George. Suffering from a mental illness Lennie gets into trouble when he 's alone, but George always saves him, George knows Lennie doesn 't do anything, “out of meanness” as he says. Undoubtedly the reader assimilates that Lennie kills a young lady, said to have done so accidentally. Furthermore without any control George was forced to kill Lennie.
In ‘Of Mice and Men’, written by John Steinbeck, friendship is portrayed as one of the main themes in this novella and a very important part of people’s lives. Steinbeck also portrays friendship by highlighting the importance of friendship and showing how its presence and absence can trigger many positive and negative emotions. Its presence creates hope, feeling of companionship and a sense of responsibility. In spite of friendship’s presence creating positive feelings, its absence does the complete opposite. It generates a feeling of loneliness and isolation.
In John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men there are a lot of themes. The themes consist of friendship, loneliness, discrimination and dreams. All of these themes are important, and play immense role in the outcome at the end. The major theme is that friends stick together; unconditionally; this is demonstrated through Lennie and George's actions in Weed, in the bunk house, and in the aftermath of Curly's wife's death. One example of true friends sticking together is exemplified when George stays with Lennie after Lennie's actions in Weed.
Friendship for me is a type of bond that two people have, they understand one another, listen to each other, and they help each other to almost everything. Friendship is almost like a type of relationship as if you would consider them as a brother or sister. Some friendships last long and others just don't last that long but if you and a friend of yours solve your problems and are in good conditions then that is how you get a good friendship relationship. Forgiveness is the answer for me. A novella that can relate to friendship would be Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck.
