Friendship in life and Streetcars

In Stanley Gordon’s book Until They Bring The Streetcars Back we meet the main character Cal in jail. Cal goes to St. Paul Central High School in St Paul Minnesota. Cal meets a girl named Gretchen and finds out she is being beaten by her dad. Cal becomes friends with Gretchen and wants to do anything he can to help. She doesn’t want him to get involved. Friendship is a huge part of this story. It is shown in this story and real life because people care for eachother. Cal is worried about Gretchen and what she is going through. An example is from what Cal said in the book “Cripes, what difference did it make if we lost one lousy basketball game compared to what Gretchen was going through every day.” Cal is saying that what is the big deal it's a basketball game. They could be going through a lot harder times like Gretchen is. There are examples of friendship in real life and action too. To have a good friendship you need to engage the person. According to the article “Is True Friendship Dying Away” Mark Vernon says “there is a secret to close friendship, it's engaging the person. This is saying if you want a good and close friendship you need to engage the person. Cal engages Gretchen and helps her. Cal is worried about his father and Gretchen at the same time. Cal is starting to worry about people non stop. A quote in the book shows this “With my father's job hanging by a thread, and Gretchen more and more scared that she’d go crazy, it was no wonder I worried sometimes.” Cals father's job might be gone soon so he worried. He is also worried about Gretchen going crazy. Cal needs Gretchen to realize that he is here for her and always will be. He doesn’t want Gretchen to hide from all of her problems, that’s not how you fix things. In the article “How To Make Close Friends” it states that to reduce your stress you need to not hide and need to have a social life. You need to communicate in life to start making friends.
