After reviewing the article From Cattle and Coke to Charlie: Meeting the Challenge of Self Marketing and Personal Branding, Shepherd (2005) emphasizes that in recent years, especially in the United States, there has been a multitude of personal development companies established that encourage and advise individuals how to market and brand themselves to obtain gainful employment (pp.589-590). One of the most important topics discussed in this article advises individuals how to “make themselves known in the marketplace” by discovering and accentuating one's key skills and attributes, so that they may be conformed to accommodate specific market needs (Shepard, 2005). With this being said, personal branding is a public perception of your personality and abilities and you should express yourself and what you stand for with everyone that you come in contact with whether it be in your personal or professional life.
While this article discussed many pointers to help strengthen how we self-market ourselves, we are often subjected to many different forms of self-marketing, whether it be by word-of-mouth, networking connections, or general self-presentation. Many of us including myself, typically strive to be considered as responsible, trustworthy, and professional by our peers. This is especially important during the interview process that many of us will face after graduation.
