Chapter 5 “The Revolutionary Era: Crossroads of Freedom,” This chapter focuses on Revolutionary era and the war between Britain and the colonies. It shed light on the lives of the African Americans during the war and the decisions they made to fight with or against the colonies they were enslaved in. The first important topic is about Thomas Peters fight to get his freedom.
Chapter 9 The Jefferson Era was between 1800 and 1816. It started with The Federalist and Republican Parties fighting an election campaign in 1800. Federalists supported President Adams and Charles Pinckney for vice president. Republicans nominated Thomas Jefferson for president and Aaron Burr as his running mate.
A time of immense change and political involvement, the antebellum years of the early 1800s is one of the most intriguing time periods of America’s history. Harry L. Watson’s incredible book, Liberty and Power: The Politics of Jacksonian America, details the ups and downs of politics during Jacksonian America. Watson does a great job on explaining how the eighteenth century concept of republicanism transformed nineteenth century America in the form of a ‘market revolution.’ Social, political and economic changes were the center of life during Jacksonian America. Watson’s synthesis is a must-read for anyone interested in Jacksonian politics.
Latin American Independence is unimaginable without Simon Bolivar. Simon Bolivar wanted equality, and had an extremely strong desire for glory. He was the liberator of six nations, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, and was know as the George Washington of South America. Simon Bolivar, was born into an upscale, wealthy family, and was educated at a young age. In Europe, he learned about the concept of the Enlightenment which drove him to overrun the reigning Spanish.
Gomez suffered under the harsh ruling of Vasco Goncalez and would escape to live amongst the natives. Many other Africans would follow in Gomez’s footsteps were they lucky enough to have the opportunity to escape. Esteban was an African slave who had the opportunity to be somewhat of a leader of Native American slaves. He was a leader in the search for Cibola, or the “city of gold.” Esteban was met with resistance when he did eventually find a town he believed was the city he was searching for.
Here, Bolivar had easy connections through rivers and seas, which played a big role during the time of war. Bolivar’s plan of action was to perform a surprise attack on an area in northern Venezuela. He would cross the river and go through the Andes Mountains, which was definitely not an easy task as many troops died along the way. Bolivar, along with his fearless personality kept on going and made it to an area called Boyacá, ready to fight against a fierce group called the Royalists. Although outnumbered physically, Bolivar mentally believed he would win and he did just that, as him and his men beat the royalists and took over the area.

This important early Nineteenth-Century leader was named Simon Bolivar. Simon Bolivar as a leader stood out more than all of the other leaders, because he played a crucial role in Latin American independence. He was a revolutionary intellectual, and visionary man that made Latin American independence successful during the nineteenth century.
Samuel “Sam” Houston was born in Virginia 1793 and died in 1863. He became a lawyer, congressman, and senator in Tennessee. Sam joined the growing conflict between the U.S. and the Mexican government and became commander of the local army when he moved to Texas in 1832. On April 21, 1836, at the San Jacinto Sam and his men defeated Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in just 18 minutes. He was voted for president in 1836 and in 1841.
By pointing out the relation between rebellion and government, Thomas Jefferson made a very interesting statement. He believed that recurring changes in revolution had to exist to obtain a healthy democracy and government. By believing this he also believed in rebellion. Taking from Jefferson’s statement a rebellion corrects the faults of a government and more importantly is necessary to guarantee the strength of a society and supports the public freedom.
‘The Second Revolution: Thomas Jefferson & Haiti’ lecture was rather thought provoking as it urged listeners to challenge the true meaning of a revolution. The lecturers claim that a revolution is not a noun but an adjective contradicts its definition, further influencing listeners to ruminate on the ideals of a revolution. I agreed with his point that the Haitian revolution was a serious of events not just a single event. Much like the Haitian revolution, the lecturer details another revolution; The Thomas Jefferson revolution.

Chavez was an inspirational speaker and that is why there is also more Mexican Americans register to vote. Chavez organized many marches and boycotts to help farm workers. He also started strikes and boycotts against the Grape Farms and won. He affected the progress of civil rights so much that there was a funeral for him. It was the largest funeral of any labor leader in the history of the United States.
Andrew Jackson was a wild, energetic president that had the will and stability to make the United States a stronger, and more unified nation. A good democracy, in general, requires equal rights, an educated and strong leader, peace, stability, checks and balances, voting rights, and power in the hands of the people. Having a good and strong democracy also requires leadership of the people, and for them to stand up for their rights. In Andrew Jackson’s presidency, he is known for always striving for what he wants, even if the people of the United States didn’t agree with him.
Lopez the pioneer of revoking Venezuelan government has influenced the people in many ways. First , similar as Thoreau he has been saying to people to wait on the government and actually vote against them. It is a way to be just and honest and also violence will be avoided. Therefore he doesn’t want to play or act like the government is acting with violence. Thoreau believes that people have the obligation to not commit injustice but don’t give injustice to your supporters.
