The play "Fuenteovejuna" was an interesting one by Lupe De Vega. It takes place in the town of Fuenteovejuna and revolves around villagers and a cruel commander who tries to make life difficult for them. The theme of the play seems to be that of honor and love. The play reflects this Spanish code that governs social relationships between those who have a higher status and authority to those who don't. In this play honor stems from group esteem as the social group is more significant than individual integrity. In this play, honor is not only limited to the outward exhibition of courage and play. She is both strong-willed and courageous. Laurencia is the love of Frondoso and daughter of Esteban who is the mayor of the village. Her character throughout the play as a woman and her bravery are put through certain tests. She is tortured and abused and yet remains strong which makes her presence the anchoring force that moves the plot forward. She is also the one that knocks sense into the villagers and brings them together to take down the cruel commander. Her heroine traits are witnessed throughout the play. She escapes from captivity under the nose of Commander Gómez de Guzmán and also manages to escape when he tries to rape her. She stands up against the brutality and also frees her husband Frondoso. Last but not the least, Laurencia speaks up about what happens to her, shows the villagers the bruises on her body and convinces them to over throw Commander Guzman. All these traits of bravery and her high level of leadership skills make her one of the most significant characters in the play. The Antagonist of the play is Guzman who is the Feudal lord of the village. He is portrayed as cruel, selfish and a womanizer. He is not just with his people and therefore is not liked by the villagers. He attempts to kidnap Laurencia and have her husband executed. He disrespects the villagers and also threatens to kill anybody that comes in his way. His career of tyranny and treachery ends when he is overthrown and killed by the people of
