After Target’s computer systems were hacked CEO Greg Steinhafel exhibited all four managerial functions. The four managerial functions are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. The planning function is establishing objectives and selecting the process of how to achieve them. Steinhafel displayed this function of management by establishing the objective as repairing the damage with customers and regaining their trust in the organization. Steinhafel displayed this function by staffing call centers to handle customer questions and complaints, setting up data security units, and putting lawyers in charge of lawsuits and legal questions. The resources Steinhafel used were people and money. The leading function of management is motivating people to work hard to achieve the company’s objectives and guiding them in how to do it. Steinhafel showed leadership by making a video addressing customers and giving them tips on how to watch their accounts for unauthorized transactions. I think this helped Steinhafel connect with the customers on a personal level and showed employees they were not alone in dealing with this crisis. The controlling function of management is evaluating employee performance and progress towards completing the objectives, and making corrections to the plan or employee performance if needed. Steinhafel displayed this function by holding status meetings twice a day (Kinicki & Williams,
