Functional communication training (FCT) is frequently used with learners with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Individuals with ASD often engage in problem or challenging behaviors such as aggression, self-injury, stereotyped behaviors, and tantrums. Research suggests that there is a connection between communication difficulties and the display of problematic behaviors. Individuals with ASD engage in the problem or challenging behaviors because of the skill deficit of social-communication allowing them to engage in age-appropriate interaction. FCT is helpful in reducing the challenging behavior and replacing the problem behavior with an appropriate behavior. FCT utilizes a multistep procedure to assess the behavior and conduct the training: 1) Assess the function of the behavior, 2) Select the communication modality, 3) Create teaching solutions, 4) Prompt communication, 5) Fade prompts, 6) Teach new communication responses, and 7) Modify the environment.

FCT is utilized to reduce problem behaviors in individuals with ASD. According to the research, problem behaviors are three to four more times more frequent for those with ASD than those without disabilities. In addition, it has been found that early school failure is related to problem behaviors. Challenging behaviors can affect more than just academic settings, they can also interfere with family, employment and community activities. Parental stress is also shown to increase with a child with a challenging behavior. I then would explain that FCT is tailored to meet the child’s needs. The FCT would teach the communication skills the child needs to improve the quality of life for the individual. FCT can be implemented in the schools, home, and community.
