After some research, I knew that this song was first used in a musical Funny Girl in 1964, and naturally, used in movie version of this musical in 1968. The composer Jule Styne was famous for a series of Broadway musicals. In his career, he used to be a vocal coach, however, he was fired and told should write songs because “that’s forever”. Then he started to make a living on this and even made a lot of wonderful work especially songs for movies and musicals which were really forever. Personally speaking, I think nobody’s gonna say that the song is not necessary after listening to this song. Simply reading the text, I know this lyrics want to show a girl’s optimism and confidence, however, without song, the block text is kind of monotonous. I mean, the song with emotional ups and downs perfectly brings the audience’s heart up and down and let them experience the optimism which the singer expresses at the top point at the end of this song. …show more content…
The Funny Girl shows a girl who was just an insignificant stage-struck teen, and after unremitting effort, she finally became a super Broadway star. However, she couldn't control the relationship and her husband going worse because her husband’s arrest for gambling. This song Don't Rain on My Parade was sung twice at the end of Act I(she married her husband) and the end of Act II(she broke up with her husband but resolved to pick up her life again). If we just listen to this song not knowing anything about this musical, we may only know how this girl is enthusiastic about singing and life, but we’ll never know what this girl experienced and learned from life, and what made her pick up her love to songs and life.
