The novel, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is set in a futuristic society in which the citizens mindlessly drift through life. These people drive very fast, lack basic social skills, and are forbidden from reading books. After meeting an inquisitive young lady name Ckairessem the protagonist, Guy Montag, begins to question the society he lives in, and begins to wonder what books have to offer. Guy is a fireman, but instead of putting out houses on fire, he burns books that are found in people’s possession because all houses in this society have been fireproofed. Because of his profession, he was easily able to get his hands on a number of books that he would later explore. There is one scene inparticular in which Montag's wife, Mildred has her friends, Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles over to watch the giant sized wall television. They agree to talk politics, which seems like it would be an intelligent conversation, but as it turns out, even the electoral process is controlled by the government. We find this out by the ladies talking about how they simply voted for the more attractive candidate, and that this is how most of the nation voted because that man won by a landslide. This glitch in the voting process shows that the election was rigged by the government, and that the citizens mindlessly voted based upon what the government pushes upon them. Angered by this, Montag takes out a poetry book. The women are upset by this and bide him not to read it simply because it is illegal, and without any other reason than the fact that the government told them not to.
