Raskolnikov low economic status affected lead him to trials and misfortune. Poverty taints people’s minds making them more susceptible to participating in sinful nature. However, poverty can make one humble and yearn to God in order to alleviate suffering. In Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment Raskolnikov poverty made him inclined to sin and receptive to repent. The overall standard of living lead Raskolnikov to commit murder. His lack of money required him had to leave school due to the high cost tuition and live in a hot and stuffy apartment located at the top of the complex. His isolation from the world and his poverty arguably lead him to his madness. Murder, a type of sin sprouted from Raskolnikov’s belief that money symbolizes power. His envy towards a woman that had the upper-hand in life due to her wealth made her a target. Raskolnikov’s poverty made him susceptible to committing a crime because he lives in a society where money grants food, opportunities, and a good name. In Crime and Punishment the characters with money hold the power, a power that Raskolnikov yearns for. All of Raskolnikov’s problems sprouted due to the lack of money and this retaliation towards an elderly woman seemed like Raskolnikov’s only alternative in order to avenge society for regarding money as power.After committing the crime Raskolnikov tries to disguise his actions by: inspecting any traces of blood on his clothes, cleaning the axe he stole to commit the murder, and hiding his tracks under a stone.
