I learn that Gatsby was not born into wealth and privilege and did not have any special background that gave him an advantage over others. From the past, he was not a true Oxford man as “[he] only stayed for five months”(129). He did not come from the old money or a wealthy family because “his parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people” (98), but his struggle against poverty was what made him exceptional. Instead of discouraging him, his living conditions sparked the desire and pursuit of personal success. What he did daily when he was young and poor has impressed me the most and inspired me to apply his methods into my life, because with the creation of his daily schedules which was divided into his well organized routine and “general resolves” (173), he has proved his potential for greatness because he predetermined the ways to success, which was constant self-improvement.
Instead, they take notice to her appearance which, in their opinion trumps her educational needs. He later dropped out of St. Olaf since he was tired of the low quality college also because he was working as a janitor to support his tuition. His hatred for poverty and disadvantage grew. When I joined AVID in seventh grade I was amazed how AVID works and how it can be used every day. Not only AVID helps you with your grades, but it also helps you to be more organized and a hard-working student. AVID helped me discover my full potential by showing me that I can always do better. What I mean by this is that in sixth grade I was not in AVID, I made all A’s and B’s. In seventh grade when I was in AVID, I made all A’s.
Gatsby’s “Greatness” Greatness is showed by the choices we make in life. From how we see the circumstances and how we react to them. Gatsby is not as great of a man as Nick claims that he is. Gatsby makes foolish, childish and delusional decisions and not at all great.
Gatsby attempted to change who he was to impress Daisy Buchanan and her family, but at the end of the day, it still wasn’t good enough. If you spend your entire life attempting to be something, and no one cares, is it meaningless? What was Gatsby’s purpose in life if he did win Daisy back and was unable to move forward. At the beginning of Gatsby’s funeral, nobody showed but nick and a few others. This just shows how much of a failure he was at the end of the day.

We all like to believe that hard work and persistence pays off. The Great Gatsby is a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald that includes many themes such as wealth, love, dissatisfaction, and most importantly, the American dream, and how it’s really only a dream. The characters, especially Gatsby, are trying to achieve this dream of a perfect life throughout the entire book. It becomes apparent that instead of reaching the success they desire from the hard work that they put in, they destroy their entire lives and relationships with one another in the process. Unfortunately, this story is not too far off from something that could happen today.
Gatsby represents the American Dream throughout the story, he works hard towards rewarding achievements but is let down, because others would rather have money, power, and society’s approval. Jay Gatsby grew up in a poor family from North Dakota. As a farm child he worked hard and followed the American dream. He wanted to escape the poor farm life and make a name for himself. He wanted to be someone that was looked up to by others.
