Galapagos Islands Research Paper

239 Words1 Pages
The Galapagos Islands are a series of isolated chains of islands formed of coral, that are located far off the coast of Ecuador, South America. They were discovered by the Spaniard Tomás de Bertagna in 1535. The Galapagos, being 620 miles away from the South American mainland, are considered to be “a world apart from anywhere else on Earth” (http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/world-heritage/galapagos-islands/). The plate that the Galapagos are located on, is the northern edge of the Nazca plate. The Nazca plate itself is found currently drifting south, and away from the Cocos plate as well as east, away from the Pacific plate. This archipelago of active volcanic islands was formed when the Nazca plate moved over a geological “hot spot”.
