In the story The Outsiders written by S.E Hinton, there are two rival groups/ gangs, the greasers and the Socs. A young boy named Ponyboy explained his journey being a greaser and the sacrifices, consequences, and decisions he had to manage with. This story reminds me of William Shakespeare's story Romeo and Juliet of their similarities which are they gangs, fights, and loyalty and differences that are the wealthiness, behaviors, and between the two books. One of the similarities of the two books is the groups/ gangs, because in Romeo and Juliet there are the Montague and Capulets and in The Outsiders there are the greasers and the Socs. They are both enemies and try to sabotage and fight each other when every they have the chance to.
Have you ever wondered how life was like when schools were only for the privilege and Kings still ruled over cities. Well Romeo and Juliet tells of just that. In the story a man and a woman meet and instantly fall in love, but both of their families are in a fued which causes plenty of bloodshed and ultimately the death of the two lovers, now the question is who is to blame for the blood loss and tears shed for them? The first thing that came to mind was the feud between the two families.
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a perfect example of how poor choices don’t only affect one’s own futures but also those of their communities. Romeo and Juliet fall in love despite their families, the Montagues and the Capulets, being enemies. The two marry in secret and plan to live a happy life together before a deadly fight breaks out between the Montagues and the Capulets and the lovers are separated. The heartbreaking story consists of risky decisions and bad timing. Romeo’s own impulsive nature, demonstrated when he kills Juliet’s kinsman, breaks Verona’s law of banishment, and suicidal act, all contribute to the tragic end of Romeo and Juliet.
First, the author states, “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,/Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.” (Prologue.3-4). Shakespeare attributes the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet as stemming from “ancient grudge”, which is the long-lasting feud between the two families. He then suggests that it is the “civil hands” or family members, who brought them to their deaths. In addition, Shakespeare gives the spoiler that, “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life.”
In many high schools, 9th graders read stories from different times and of different genres in their english classes. Notably, one of the most prominent stories read by high schoolers is The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. However, there is controversy that high schoolers should not read this Shakespearean play because many argue that it is not relevant to what teens deal with on a daily basis. Despite the fact that the tragedy takes place in the 14th century, teens were no different back then. As a matter of fact, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet presents topics that present-day teens still struggle with such as brain development, tunnel vision, and how to correctly approach suicidal teens.
Teenage rebellion in Romeo and Juliet Almost everyone in the world wants to someday have children. Children are cute and people want to start a family. The idea of kids sounds great until you think of one thing, dealing with the teenage years. The teenage years are when the sweet, little child turns into the stubborn, little teenager who doesn’t listen, argues with everything and tries to do whatever they want, whenever they want. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the two main characters and their friends are just those teenagers who in many ways, show characteristics of being the most rebellious teenagers around.
The Feud in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet The aim of this essay is to define the nature of the feud in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and to discuss its function in the dramatic development of the play. The conflict between the families of Montagues and Capuletes is presented as the outcome of an ultimate expression of patriarchal society in Verona which promotes virility at any cost and obscene sexual innuendo targeting women. However, the love of Romeo and Juliet comes to prove the young people’s indifference towards the feud but at the same time the patriarchy’s tremendous power over them. Finally, the family’s feud combined with the contribution of fate makes the timing of events such, that a tragic resolution cannot be prevented.
Gang Definition and Classification Classifying gangs is no simple task and to begin you must thoroughly understand the definition and requirements of being classified as a such. There are multiple definitions of a gang, according to The Modern Gang Reader but the one I will focus on is “A street gang is any durable street-oriented youth group whose involvement in illegal activity is part of its group identity.” Now that the definition has been identified it needs to be broken down further to clearly differentiate why this definition is essential.
Romeo and Juliet is a well-known play written by William Shakespeare. Even though it is famous for being a love story, Shakespeare demonstrates that rebellion is closely tied together either it through the characters: Juliet, Romeo and Tybalt. By defying their families, authority and society's expectations, they set in motion the events in this tragedy. Romeo’s rebellion against society's expectations and his own family, the Montagues, is because of his love. His love of Rosaline is his first demonstration of defiance.
According to Derek Landy, a famous irish author and screenwriter, “ Violence is never the answer, until it’s the only answer.” This message stays true in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. In this dreamful play, there are two passionate lovers. On one hand there is Romeo, belonging to the Montague family, and on the other hand there is Juliet, belonging to the Capulet family. Unfortunately, for Romeo and Juliet, their families have been fighting in a never ending feud against each other.
The people who live in Verona are well aware of the continual conflict between the Montague’s and the Capulet’s. In William Shakespears’ Romeo and Juliet, hatred is shown to be a destructive force that causes people to make destructive decisions. Hatred takes a big part in the play showing violence between the 2 families that will make a drastic change in the play.
