The Author’s Story: Gary Paulsen Books like Hatchet and The Rifle have captivated young minds for years, and they will continue to do so for many more years. Gary Paulsen wrote these and many more young fiction works. His famous books enthrall young minds with compelling stories fueling imaginations everywhere. Paulsen has had a very long and eventful life. His life has inspired many of his books, creating many adventurous stories for him to tell his grandchildren, and them theirs. An eventful childhood can shape a person’s character for the rest of their life. Paulsen was born May 17, in Minneapolis Minnesota. He was the child of Oscar and Eunice Paulsen. In an interview, he once said he was a shy, unathletic child who loved to read whenever he could. He eventually moved to the Philippines at the age of seven where his parents eventually divorced. This caused him develop more independence and eventually, left home for the Army. His middle life influenced his writings severely also. In May of 1962, Paulsen was discharged from the Army after four years. He received the American Library Association’s Best Young Adult Books in 1983. He also won the Society of Midland Author Award in 1985. He also received the Newbery Honor Book award in 1986. His awards inspired him to write even more books to enthrall young minds to come for many generations. The lives he has touched with stories will continue on throughout their lives with these adventures. Paulsen and his writings will be remembered for years to come. His captivating stories make him and his works hard to forget. Once these are a part of your life, you may never forget them.
