Soto explains in “The Jacket” that when he was a young boy he asked for a biker jacket, a simple enough request, or so he thought. The jacket his mother purchased for him was the furthest thing from his request. Soto’s new jacket was an oversized, vinyl, green, disaster just waiting to happen. He finally accepted he would have to wear this new jacket for a while, owing to his small frame. Broken Chain by Gary Soto is one of the two stories that I picked, the other being Seventh Grade still by Gary Soto have lots of differences and lots of similarities you notice only when you compare them. Both Broken Chain and Seventh grade have many thing alike, even though they are two unique stories. Both have the main characters ,Victor and Alfonso, who want to impress a girl they know and like. But still they run into some hard times trying. They embarrass themselves in the process too.

Body image can also impact the type of physical activity you feel comfortable participating in, how you feel about it and your outlook on sport. One’s body image can affect their total outlook of physical education / training (i.e. if they are smaller / shorter than anyone else there or they are taller / plumper than anyone else there.) The article Broken Bench explains the controversy over having “tiny courts” in New York State. The author, William Glaberson argues that the idea of justice within the jurisdiction of these tiny courts is unfairly decided among the justices in charge. Due to the lack of experience of these justices, it is difficult for fair justice to be dealt out. Men and women nowadays are starting to lose self-confidence in themselves and their body shape, which is negatively impacting the definition of how beauty and body shape are portrayed. “...97% of all women who had participated in a recent poll by Glamour magazine were self-deprecating about their body image at least once during their lives”(Lin 102). Studies have shown that women who occupy most of their time worrying about body image tend to have an eating disorder and distress which impairs the quality of life. In today’s modern culture, almost all forms of popular media play a significant role in bombarding young people, particularly young females, with what happens to be society’s idea of the “ideal body”. This ideal is displayed all throughout different media platforms such as magazine adds, television and social media – the idea of feminine beauty being strictly a flawless thin model. The images the media displays send a distinct message that in order to be beautiful you must look a certain way. This ideal creates and puts pressure on the young female population viewing these images to attempt and be obsessed with obtaining this “ideal body”. Maybe it’s Maybelline.” This slogan has been heard in every Maybelline makeup commercial and presents its viewers with women with unrealistically long eyelashes, flawless skin and fully glossed lips. But have we ever stopped to consider the message that these commercials entail? Could these Maybelline models have stumbled upon a full face of makeup that could be mistaken as a natural look?
