FUNDAMENTAL OF ARTS The book “Gateways to the arts” by Debra J. Dewrite, Ralph M. Larmann, and M. Kathryn Shields explains the important of the artworks and develop the skills of analyzing, interpreting, and the ways of looking at the work of art. This book repeatedly encounter me as I read the book and helps me a lot to approach to the depth of arts. The understanding of the basic elements of the arts and the principle of the arts are very important to encounter the power and the value of the artwork. The line, shape, and contrast helps the artists to communicate with the visual ideas. These elements allow artists to describe the beauty and ugly nature of our world, and express the hidden emotional experiences of the human soul. The uses of the elements of line and shape within two dimensions have height and width, but not depth in the artwork. Through this, artists can communicate almost every influence and effects in humankind history. For example, the ancient lines drawn on the ground by the Nazca of Peru and the brutal gun crime in a digital artwork by Noma Bar. In fundamentals, we can use regular, irregular, actual, implied, directional, and contour lines. Shapes can be geometric or organic within two dimensions. Artists can also indicate these shapes without using a regular boundary. For example, the AT&T logo artist used the blue lines to indicate a spherical shape. On the other hand, contrast can be created using the positive and negative shapes. For example, figure-ground reversal, such as Water I and M. C. Escher’s Sky.
