In Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry, I would film the book in color. A plentiful amount of the story talks about color and I feel that if the color scheme got taken away when filmed, it would drastically make the story a lot worse. Gathering Blue is about a character named Kira who lives in a dystopian world (This book is related to The Giver. Afterall, it is part of the same series and the same author wrote them both.) where she has lost her mother. Kira is bound to be banished because her father, a powerful man, got taken by beasts and her mother died of a disease. Another reason why she would be banished is that of her twisted leg, causing her to be no use for doing normal work that the other women do. The community she lived in kept her because she had a special talent, which is weaving. The people assigned her to the job of weaving the Singer’s robe, which is an intricate design full of colors which described stories of the past. Kira accepted this job because every year there is a ceremony, where the Singer would have his Staff and his Robe, both of them describing the times of the past. These items helped the Singer as he recited a song remembering the people of the early times their community went through. Kira accepted this job since it was an honor to even touch the Singer’s Robe, and she also did it since it became her only way to survive. When Kira would weave, she would use colors for the Robe, which would put emphasis on the stories that the Robe withheld. Colors were an essential part, and Kira learned how to make every single one except blue, which was heard to be extremely rare. Not only was it hard to find, but Kira didn’t learn the recipe to create blue which was a very important color. Later in the story, she received blue from a stranger, who started to unfold the truth. When the stranger came, Kira found out more about where she really lived. The realization came to her as she found out her community was full of lies and was corrupt. The blue in the story came from other places, and I felt that it resembled peace and hope in her corrupt world. Because
