Corruption within Disney: Women Character Portrayal Most people can reminisce through their youth and find an embodiment of Disney movies within their memory. However, as naïve children at the prime of innocence, little would society have known that through these fairy tales of princes and princesses, society has been conformed to depict these characters as the ideal model for men and women. Disney has been in control of its consumers since 1937, using its source of “happiness” to impact children’s depiction of emotional and mental behavior, and thus forth molding a generation of people that are unable to reach Disney’s unrealistic expectations for their physical and mental attributes. The reality is, Disney has influence upon its millions of consumers, but the significance lies within the prospect of how Disney movies depict its characters. As one ventures into one of Disney’s princess movies, The Little Mermaid, one can find an inappropriate and disgusting interpretation of women. What seems like an innocent movie about a teen mermaid is only an illusion. The little mermaid--Ariel, makes a bargain with Ursula, an unscrupulous antagonist to exchange her tail for human legs; when she awakes on shore, she immediately falls in love with a prince, and she strives to satisfy him. The movie clearly interprets a 16 year old not only abandoning her family for a man, but changing her body to satisfy his expectations— “she gave up her strongest talent in order to get your [her] man.” (Picket 1). Despite the fact that Disney made Ariel with features worth praising—her desire to explore and experience a life beyond what confines her, ultimately become traits overshadowed by her subservient role. Her character further develops from an adventurous mermaid into one whom immediately turns her ambitions
