Gender inequality, described as “the disparity in status, power and prestige between people who identify as women and men”, is recognized in today’s society ("Gender Inequality in the U.S. Today." Trust Women. 19 Mar. 2012. Web. 29 July 2015.). Women and men are both entitled to the same benefits, however, due to stereotypes and personal preferences, women are treated as if they are not in the workplace. Men and women could both hold the same occupation, but with thorough research, women are paid less. With unequal pay and discrimination, this problem exists in the workplace, socially, and around the globe. Many determining factors contribute to the unequal pay between men and women. Factors, as stated before, include race, age, the type of job, location, and the amount of time and effort you put into work. With these determining factors in place, this leads some to believe that gender inequality in the workplace does not exist. Men will choose riskier jobs that tend to pay more. They will go after the highest wage and will deal with more stress than women. Women tend to choose jobs that do not require heavy labor. Those positions are soon left open and men choose to take them. These jobs require manual labor that men are more likely to do. This leads to higher pay for men. Many would also say that the pay gap is nonexistent because they have conducted research that men work longer than women. “The average full time working man works 6 hours per week or 15 percent longer than the average full time working woman.”(CBSNews “Why the Gender Gap is a Complete Myth”, Steve Tobak). While there are problems that face the corporate world, there are problems as well in the self-owned business. Due to personal preference of the customer, they will often be drawn to a business led by a man rather than a woman.
