For ages now, women from all around the world have been facing discrimination. In a way, all women share the same weight or burden, for simply being women. Women have been disrespected, mistreated and judged way before Ancient Greece appeared, and this hasn’t stopped ever since. Sure, as the world developed and changed you would expect the same to happen with the way society views women, but very minimum changes have occurred. Reading “The Bean Trees” proved the shared burden of womanhood to the readers.

One of the biggest issues women face ,or children to be specific, is child marriage, or arranged marriage . Barbaric beliefs drive families to get rid of their young girls, to give them away to men double their age, simply because the father believes that the daughter is a burden to the family. This is a human right’s violation and manifestation of gender inequality. Over 700 million women alive today were married as children, 1 in 3 child brides were married under 15. This is mostly common in developing countries, like Niger, Pakistan and India. Countries where education is not available for everyone, especially girls. By taking away a girl’s childhood, her education is also taken away. In Malawi for instance, 62% of uneducated girls are also child brides. 44% of the female children can not access primary school, the home to the basics of life. At the same time, child brides face another major issue, which is pregnancy. The bodies of those children brides are too fragile to handle pregnancy, but it is still very frequent. Child brides are more likely to have children and less likely to be medically taken care of. In Niger for instance, 11% of brides that are married before the age of 15 deliver their babies in a health facility.
