The high demand and expectations for gangs include loyalty and equal protection to all of the members. Personality traits are a vital factor to comprehending violence in prisons. Inmates have already diverged themselves from the norms of society by showing and acting out. Prisoners who have: psychological illnesses, alcohol and drug addictions, and prior history pertaining to incarceration are associated to prisons and are connected to tendencies that are violent.

Suicide attempt, suicide ideation and suicide. Suicide ideation is the attempt to harm oneself. Suicide ideation is someone who plans their death or thinks out their death. They have not acted on the thought, but they think about the situation. Some prisoners have families. They are the mother, father, sister, brother, etc… to people who could be ill, or spouses, lovers who have been together for years. Yet, some inmates decide to take their lives. When the inmate decides to take their life, then the whole correctional facility goes on lockdown. Some inmates feel that they cannot survive because they cannot adjust to the lifestyle of the prison. They do not earn enough at the time to buy goods from the store. Others feel that they will be there for the rest of their lives, so they feel that death is their escape. There are many contributing factors why inmates commit suicide, but the last factor that is important is bullying. Bullying can take place because of insecurity. Inmates are placed in programs based off of their back ground and education level. Inmates that are illiterate are placed in different classes.
