The Novel “The Joy Luck Club” written by Amy Tan, is a story about how Chinese women were treated in China, and what lessons they learned about themselves and others. Due to the many cultural difference in China, these mothers have much experience with the way women were treated and have gained much wisdom as they grow older, and as the story goes the elderly mothers help their daughters with problems relating to marriage as they tell their stories and experiences that they went through in China both as a child and adult, so they can help their daughters make better decisions for themselves. ` When the daughters of Lindo Jong and An-Mei were kids, their mothers were best friends and also great competitors, so they had used their children as their chess pieces in their game. An-mei influences the way her daughter Rose grows up because she missed out on having a mother growing up. In their relationship, An-mei sees Rose's problems and wants to help, but Rose pushes her away. She'd rather talk to a psychiatrist than her mother. By the end of Rose's story, her relationship with her mom and her ability to stand up for herself changes. Since An-mei never had her mom around she wants to be close to her daughter and let Rose experience what she didn’t get to.
Rose had felt lost, no one wanted to help her, and her life was falling apart. After her mother calls her, Lena thinks that her mother wants to save the marriage, but she was surprised when she said “I am not telling you to save your marriage [...] I only say you should speak up” (Tan 193). Finally liberated, Rose decides to skip her appointment with her psychiatrist and divorce Ted right there.
Lily has the strongest relationship with Rosaleen, in which she describes her: She had a big round face and a body that sloped out from her neck like a pup tent, and she was so black that night seemed to seep from her skin. There are numerous examples of the hardships and sacrifices that mothers make for their children; these sacrifices teach and influence all the daughters to help them have a better understanding of the world and their expectations.
After Ted visits the house in order to collect the divorce papers, Rose finds out about his new lover and she feels completely devastated. This new emotion leads something to click inside her head and, as she described, “And then for the first time in months, after being in limbo all that time, everything stopped” (Tan, pg. 194). Something inside Rose changes and she finally allows herself to challenge her husband. Rose realizes that she wasn’t actually seeing things for what they were and was allowing her ex-husband to continue controlling her, seeing as though she was going to simply accept the money and sign the papers. In being the first to value a foreigner, others follow in Rose 's footsteps. These associations become a symbol of peace at a time when politics have prevented any policy of trust. At the eighth grade of Rose she begins to feel the gloominess because of her best friend Daisy. When Rose and Daisy are both little one they had been joined at the hip, they are like a twin sister but Rose never noticed how hard it would be to maintain a relationship that allows only one center.
Although her and her children may have noticed this untrue way of viewing their unfortunate lifestyle, Rose Mary remained persistent and cheery. Rose Mary viewed every shift in their lives as an “adventure” and made the better of it. Along with this, Rose Mary is also optimistic when it comes to future opportunities. When the Walls move to Phoenix, Rose Mary’s children quickly begin complaining about moving back to their old home. Rose Mary knows that will not be possible and when her children ask to go home she responds, “We've already been there… and there are all sorts of opportunities here that we don’t even know about.”
