“Gender roles have always been crucial in the horror genre” (Blakeley). The roles of women in horror movies have evolved through the last decades from being almost inexistence to actually surviving the odds. There are more horror movies that portray women as the badass villains and of course the sweet survivor, the “final girl.” Nonetheless, these advances do not mean much when their roles have not been detached from the stereotypes constructed by the misogynist society we live on.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, women’s role in horror movies was small or passive; they will represent the victims of a ruthless villain – portrayed by a man. Later on, they became essential to the plot line, but still played a small role in those movies. They were at the time tortured, ostracized, and victimized – especially sexually. In the late decades of the century, the “final girl” archetype emerged – she is the only survivor in the movie. It was released in 2009 and starred Amanda Seyfried and Megan Fox. In the first minutes Jennifer – Megan Fox – is offered as sacrifice by a band that wanted to become famous. They needed a virgin in order for the ritual to be successful, but she was not a virgin. Therefore, Jennifer is possessed by a demon and she now has to feed on young boys to stay alive and look “normal.” Her best friend, Needy - Amanda Seyfried – is the only one who knows the truth about Jennifer. Jennifer is the popular girl with the diva attitude that every guy wants to date. On the other hand is Needy, who has always lived under the shadow of Jennifer. Needy was never going to be Jennifer’s prey, but once she confronts Jennifer for what she has done, they get into a fight. There is no need to write down how this movie ends just that the “final girl” made
