Back in 1912, when the Titanic got struck by an iceberg, the culture was a lot different in many different ways. One of the many ways is language, language was a lot more different back then. Next is clothing, people wore very fancy clothing articles back in the day. Finally, one of the most commun differences in culture, gender roles. Gender Roles play a tremendously big part, and a tremendously big difference in the contrasting cultures. There are many other reasons for different culture in this book, such as how men and women act, technology, and racism Language is extremely large in the culture back in 1912. Men did most of the work back in the day, but that does not mean women didn’t either. Women tried to help the men as much as they could. For example, on page 93, the book says “the ladies in the boat got very nervous, so I took the tiller back again and told them to manage the boat the best way the could.” In addition, this shows how they tried their very best at men 's jobs, because there was not man in the boat to help them to safety. Men always had to be nice and caring for women, they had to be very respectful towards women. For example, when the boat was sinking, men let the women go on to the lifeboat first without any sort of hesitation. Men were quite, courteous, and helping while waiting for the women to load onto the lifeboats(pg.79). Whereas today, men can be more sexist towards women and be disrespectful towards them. Women did not have as much roles as men, but they still had some major duties. Even though women didn’t have many jobs on the titanic, they did most of the work at home. Women had to care for the children, keep their home clean, wash dishes, and cook the meals(pg.97). Women, basically, had the same amount of hard work as men, if not harder because all of the duties they had to do was overwhelming. If they had multiple kids, then it would be even more overwhelming with the other chores they had to
