In the secret Annex you would have to be exceptionally quiet in order for anyone to know that there were people living there. The Holocaust started in 1933 and the Nazis invaded Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg etc. which made civilians go into hiding in order to not get captured by the Nazis and sent to concentration camps. In the book “Anne Frank's Diary” their family and the Van Daans go into hiding in the secret annex due to the dreadful Holocaust . Mr. Van Daan was an impatient, short tempered, inconsiderate man and cigarette addict. His family lived with the Franks in the secret annex where they were later found and he was sent to a concentration camp in Poland where he died at the age of 46. Van Daan to be the worst roommate is due to his extreme short temper. He said “Why aren't you nice and quiet like your sister Margot? A Man likes a girl who'll listen to him once in a while…a domestic girl, who'll keep her house shining for her husband..who loves to cook and sew..” (Act 1 & Scene 4) Mr. Van Daan making these sexist remarks first off isn't right and to make these remarks to a young girl is tremendously terrible. He has a short temper but comments like this shows when he doesn't care what he says and how quickly furious Mr. Van Daan can get in any circumstance. This would lead into it him being a very problematic member of the house. Another time that Mr. Van Daan revealed this extreme attitude was when he was talking to Anne and said “You’re the most aggravating…The trouble with is, you’ve been spoiled. What you need is a old-fashioned spanking.” (Act 1 & Scene 3) It presents this attitude by him trying to parent someone else's kid. Without reason he’s malicious towards Anne. Mr. Van Daan doesn't comprehend that she’s just a child and is naive at this age. When Mr. Van Daan gets aggravated he says things and he blows it way out of proportion. He couldn't compose his emotions towards a child so just visualize how he would react towards adults. As a result of Mr. Van Daans idiodic actions it presents that he’s a short tempered individual. He’s impatient which affects the people around him. Everything that Mr. van Daan says is very impulsive because he has no restriction on what comes out of his
