Gender stereotypes have been conveyed for many years. Men and women have fought their way through the positions they are given from society. In the past, some women did not go to school and stayed home to take care of their family, but it is a different life today. Many women go through multiple years of rigorous schooling to receive a hard earned education. Or, some men stay home to take care of their family and have their wife go work. Now, people are bringing the past into today’s society in TV shows, books, children’s movies, and all sorts of media. Children grow up seeing these stereotypes how the media chooses to show them. The view that higher education and higher level occupations is reserved for men is shown through the media in many …show more content…

It is illustrated in multiple TV shows and books. For instance, in the TV show Modern Family, both the two main female characters stay home and care for the house and kids while both husbands go to work. Phil and Jay, both husbands, are the main provider for each of their own families. One may believe after watching a show, like Modern Family, that women are not capable of reaching the intelligence level that is needed to be the working spouse for a family. As in the show, both the wives are stay at home moms that take care of their families. It is perceived that women are not taken with authority, meaning men have a hard time following instructions from women, which makes is much harder for them to succeed in the workplace. With this, it does not make sense for a woman to try to work and earn money for a family when she would not be able to make as much as her husband would. Even if a woman was to get a job, most would receive a job that is of a lower status. A woman would get a “soft job” that is an easier task to complete each day.
