Being born into a particular family determines how well off you are. Class in America determines the people that influence you, and the better opportunities you are exposed to. In Gregory Mantsios writing of “Class in America” you can understand the many differences between class and how one might have better success. Mantsios shows three profiles of three different people born into different classes. One of the profiles shows how the lifestyle might be born into a wealthy family.
In American culture control over key resources seems to be the most important to the gender stratification. Throughout time, women in America were not equal to men. The men in most cases earned money for the household, held political position, could vote, and own property. Women were there to take care of the children and the household. Over time women began to take on roles outside of the household.
Social norms are the unwritten rules of society, e.g. what is expected of us such as: holding doors open, wearing gender specific clothes. This means if you were expressing individuality you would be classed as abnormal. There are no universal set of rules because it changes with time, culture and religions , this means you would be classed as abnormal in some places and times. If you are gay or wear the opposites genders clothes then you would also be classed as abnormal, the problem about this would be, again different for other cultures because things are not the same across cultures, what is normal in one culture could differ in another as written by McLeod(2008). To define abnormality, it would be when people do not follow what is the
To what extent are the following perspectives useful in contributing to our understanding of social class and class inequality, in today’s society? Marxism, functionalism and post-modernism each offer different perspectives on the issue of social class, stratification, and class inequalities within society. Functionalism takes the view of society as like the human body, where each institution is like the organs of the body. These institution act in a more or less harmonious and integrated whole, while serving a specialised function.
How do the gender roles present in society impact a person? There are many negative ways gender roles influence a person 's mental and emotional state. In The Bell Jar, Silvia Plath presents Esther Greenwood who struggles to find her place in society due to gender roles. And Doreen who doesn’t follow them and is okay with it. Throughout the book, specifically chapters seven to nine, Plath makes it clear that gender roles negatively impact a person 's mental state through the use of many stylistic and persuasive elements.
After reading the passage I believe the culture that I had developed as a teenager is Microsystem. Which Describes the culture in which individuals live, including belief system, socioeconomic status, poverty, and ethnicity ( McWhirter et al, 2013). As Egyptian teenager, I grew up under lots of pressure such as low socioeconomic and gender discrimination, which had huge affect on my behavior. For example, gender roles in Egypt are largely associated with traditional Islamic family structures, where women's roles are closely tied to the home and men's roles tied to the public. Gender roles are based on assumed biological differences between sexes and can lead to dramatically different life experiences as well as opportunities and outcomes for individuals.
As stated by debate.org poll that 88% people agree there is still some gender stratification in the U.S.A. A good example of gender stratifications is treating female unequally as male in the workforce environment. Most CEO and higher up position are usually help by male only, and if a female tried to apply for these position then she would get rejected because she is a female. Being a female emphasis that you’re not physically and mentally qualified to take on the role of a CEO since you are a female instead you are
Some changes in our society regarding gender that have taken place over the last century are; gender and schooling, gender, income, and wealth, and housework: women’s “second shift”. First is gender and schooling. It used to be that women could not go to college and earn a degree so they could support their family. Now women are able to go to college and continue their education until they want. In the chapter it explains that women and men earn different degrees, nowadays women and men are beginning to earn degrees that would most commonly be considered different.
Poetry Connected with Race, Gender, and Class Poetry is a universal language; like music or love. In poetry there are many themes, like; Race, Gender, and Class. Each poem can be different from the message of pointing out the themes. There are two poems that clearly show the themes; Race, Gender and/or Class. The poems are; “The American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act,” written by Lucie Brock-Broido and “The Latin Deli: An Ars Poetica,” written by Judith Cofer.
America often overlooks this definition as if there were no social class due to the foundational layouts of the nation again in the instance of “all men were created equal” from the Declaration of Independence. Some believe that social class is just a “label [for] the way we can understand each other” (Stadtlander). However, the word label directly connects to what class systems are. Unequal distribution of wealth which contributes heavily to poverty could also be “the root of many of our [current] social issues” (“Social Class”). The author of “Social Class in the United States” suggests that “efforts to recognize the vast gaps in resources between groups must be increased and efforts to improve the access to resources for well-being should be a priority.”
An example of people who may be discriminated against because of their gender would be either a male or female but this would mean that someone
The movie I have chosen to review is The Help. The Help illustrates social class and inequality. After watching this movie, it was even more strongly portrayed to me how wrongly African Americans were treated in the early 1960’s and why The Civil Rights Movement was so important to our society. My knowledge of the treatment of African Americans is pretty broad, however, seeing it in movie form, it was reiterated on a larger scale. This movie also showed how members of a different social class were treated as though they weren’t as good as their fellow humans.
In the urban communities, the relationship between social class and general well-being seem rather troublesome. According to PBS (2017), “Class can be harder to spot than racial or ethnic differences, yet in many ways it’s the most important predictor of what kind of financial and educational opportunities someone will have in life (para. 2). I think that the material on social class provides evidence to the empirical fact that most individuals tend to overlook the inequalities that exist within the social classes. Throughout history, social class has been a major predictor for a tremendous amount of social inequalities related to a wide diversity of factors such as education, income, wealth and other opportunities associated with socioeconomic
Social classes are a form of social stratification that refers to the existence of structured inequalities between individuals and groups in society. A social class is a group of people of comparable status, power and wealth which are usually classified as upper class, middle class, and lower class. For each class, there are some specific opportunities available that influence their social life. We can understand about the particularity of the chances through unequal distribution of these opportunities between individuals in social classes. In here belonging to a social class seems to be an obstacle for some individuals to obtain equal opportunity, unlike upper class people.
Gender Inequality Gender inequality is a characteristic of social structure according to which different social groups (in this case men and women) have certain differences resulting in unequal opportunities. Gender inequality is associated with social construction of masculinity and femininity as oppositional categories with unequal social value (Ferree, 1999). One of the main problems in gender theory is the problem of dominance. Together with race and class gender is a hierarchical structure that could to provide both opportunities and oppression (Ferree, 1999). Gender inequality can exist in different forms, depending on culture, region, religion and other factors.
