While the two characters are friends, they are also very different in many ways Knowles shows. Knowles displays how Gene, the narrator of the story, serves as a foil character for Finny, highlighting how they contrast with each other. Finny is a natural leader, while Gene is more of a follower . This contrast shows how different personalities can affect a person's life and how they interact with others. It makes Finny look more confident than he probably really is although he appears to be a very confident person anyway. From the very beginning of the novel, we see Gene struggling with his own feelings of inadequacy and uncertainty.
