Gene is the protagonist in this novel. He is a 16-year old boy living in New England around the time of WWII. He’s about 5’8 ½ inches tall, although he tells others he is 5’9. He and many other pupils are attending school at Devon. He is in his junior year and the end of the academic year is by coming rapidly.
The novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, written by Jamie Ford, displays how a boy lived when he was younger in 1942 and when he was older in 1986. The character goes back and forth from past to present showing the struggles he overcame when he was a boy to the present time. The hardships this character went through in his younger years often led him to reflect on the past and try not to make similar mistakes that he or others around him made. Within Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, the author presents Henry with hardships with his dad, his son, and his friend showing how these challenges shaped him to be the person he grew up to be.
In a private school (Devon), there are two boys who are very close to each other and consider themselves to be best friends. One is Gene, who is very serious and studious, while the other is Finny, who is the exact opposite of Gene. He is very energetic and athletic. A Separate Peace and Dead Poets Society Compare and contrast There are many things we can compare and contrast between Dead Poets Society and A Separate Peace. The two stories are more similar than different. Both Dead poets society and A Separate peace did something illegal or “off limits” like John Knowles says in the book. Going to the cave, and having the dead poets society are similarities with A Separate Peace because in the Separate Peace the kids jumped off of the tree and had the super suicide society of the summer session.
