Eugene Shoemaker is an unrecognized American geologist who impacted the lives of those who study and learn about space. Gene was born in 1928, and throughout his childhood he had a very strong passion for rocks as he began collecting various sorts of them and studying each individual one. In fifth grade, he even studied college-level textbooks about mineralogy and biology. He went to school and earned a bachelor's degree in geology, and in the 1960s he became the first director, in the astrogeology branch of the USGS, the United States Geological Survey from 1966 to 1968. He even died in a head-on crash while traveling to Australia to visit an impact crater in July
